Are you ready to experience the most exhilarating white water in the Canadian Rockies? If you’re visiting Golden, BC, or staying nearby in Banff, the Kicking Horse River is a bucket-list-worthy addition to any trip. World famous for it’s glacial blue water, class III and IV rapids, and non-stop action, the Kicking Horse is full of life and waiting to be experienced.

2026 marks Hydra River Guide’s 40th year on the water! As we ring in the big 4-0, we couldn’t be more excited to welcome guests to the epic backyard we call home. Whether you’re looking to nab your first Class IV rapid or you’re returning for another round of splashes, Hydra River Guides is here to make every trip memorable and full of fun.

If you’re thinking about rafting the Kicking Horse this Summer, below is your quick cheat sheet to the river, rafting with Hydra, and where to grab some of the best grub before and after your day on the water. Read on to learn more!

Expertise You Can Trust

Turning 40 has given our team plenty to celebrate! Since 1986, our team of guides has dedicated themselves to learning every inch of the water here, and to creating trips that put your safety and enjoyment first. Our crew knows the rapids like the back of our hands, and we’re here to make sure that everyone is able to relax and enjoy while we steer you toward adventure. We’ll make sure that first-timers have the info they need to feel confident tackling the waves, and that even the most experienced rafters joining us feel challenged in the best way possible. Every day and every trip on the water is different, and we’re here to tailor to your needs and experience level.

Meet The Best Rapids in the Rockies

The Kicking Horse is famous for its vertical drops, which create a “staircase” of adrenaline-pumping rapids ranging from class II to IV. On our Kicking Horse Classic, you’ll tackle legendary sections like:

  • The Roller Coaster: A series of big, bouncy waves that are guaranteed to get everyone drenched.
  • Portage Shotgun: A narrow, fast-paced blast that requires some serious team paddling. This is the biggest, longest and most exciting rapid on the river
  • Hopi’s Hole: One of the most famous (and wettest!) spots on the entire river.

Pro-Tip for 2026: If you have a big crew, our Book-a-Boat option is available until mid-August and is the perfect way to keep your group together for the ultimate private river party.

Our River Base Advantage:

One of the best parts of rafting with Hydra is our private river base, located right on the riverbank. That means you can skip the time-consuming ride to your launch site, suit up, and get right to the water, maximizing your time on the water. We also have hot showers, real flush toilets and a huge area with picnic tables and volleyball courts to hang out at after your trip!

The Hydra River Guides Approved Food Edit

Rafting works up a massive appetite, and our guides have some serious opinions on where to eat!

Since the base is about 30 minutes from the nearest town, we recommend bringing a “brown bag” lunch to enjoy at our picnic tables, but if you’re looking for something a little more substantial post rafting, we’re happy to recommend:

In Golden, BC (Heading West):

  • Reposados: Incredible tacos and the best margaritas in town (Note: they are closed Mondays!).
  • Rockwater Grill: A great patio overlooking the Kicking Horse
  • Golden Sushi: A small (no tables for dine in), family-owned restaurant that’s great for takeout! Guides’ favourites include the Spicy Chirashi, a Korean delight!
  • Whitetooth Brewing Co.: Perfect for a celebratory craft beer after a day of paddling.

Heading East (Back toward Field or Banff):

  • Truffle Pigs in Field: A rustic little bistro nestled in the heart of Yoho National Park, with an amazing seasonal menu and a great selection of craft beer and wine
  • Trailhead Cafe in Lake Louise: Great for a quick and delicious grab-and-go bite.
